What are the basic cycling rules I should be aware of in Croatia?
For adults, wearing a helmet isn’t mandatory in Croatia, and it’s not required on bike paths. For riders under 16, helmets are required when riding on the road.
If you’re carrying a child in a bike seat, the child must wear a properly fastened helmet.
Even when it’s not required, we always recommend wearing a helmet for your safety.
Mobile phones can be used while riding only if you’re using a hands-free setup. Riding with headphones in both ears is not allowed, as it reduces your awareness and ability to react safely.
Bikes are not allowed on highways, express roads, or roads intended exclusively for motor vehicles.
When riding at night or in low visibility conditions, your bike must have a front and rear light turned on.
For all other rules and regulations, please refer to the Croatian Road Traffic Safety Act.
Can I take the bike on ferries to the islands?
Yes, bikes can be transported on ferries to the islands in Croatia.
Catamarans (passenger-only boats) are also commonly used. On Krilo catamarans, bikes are allowed and the price is the same as for a passenger, while Jadrolinija catamarans do not accept bikes.
You can find more information on:
- https://www.jadrolinija.hr (ferries and catamarans)
- https://www.krilo.hr (catamarans only)
If you’re able to book a ticket with a bike online, you’re all set. Otherwise, you can try directly at departure, but it depends on availability and space on board.
